Tone Policing: White Supremacy’s Favorite Tool

Written by:

There’s a reason why people tend to hate lawyers. We’re a lot. Especially litigators. We ooze passion; we call it “zealous advocacy.” It’s the job.

It’s a job that black women can’t do in peace. As a black woman lawyer, my “zealous advocacy” is commonly discolored as threatening. I know what’s going on:

Because of my new friends, I can properly articulate what’s been going on. Tone policing is white supremacy’s favorite tool to oppress black women. I offer a deeper analysis, the more melanated a black woman professional is, the more likely she is to be perceived as threatening. It is my strongly held belief that tone policing of a black woman in the workplace violates her Due Process and Equal Protection Rights.
