What Does Misogynoir Look Like?

Written by:

It is no secret that black women are at the bottom of America’s ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ anti-black caste system. In college, I took a Black Studies course called Racism 101. We got to the root of America’s ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ racial scheme. In a nutshell, the pro-slavery American ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ founders wanted a physical characteristic to separate the upper class and their servants: they CHOSE phenotype (i.e., skin color). Fast forward hundreds of years, the stench of American ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ chattel slavery still reeks strong. Misogynoir in the American ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ workplace is the clearest example. As an impact litigator who provides legal services to black women experiencing workplace discrimination, I would like to explain what misogynoir looks like.

*Feeling “Invisible” During Company Meetings/Gatherings ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ‘€

White supremacists don’t enjoy interacting with black women. Have you gone to a holiday party and felt “othered”? Do your white colleagues speak to you at team meetings?

At company gatherings, are your white colleagues’ spouses interested in meeting you? Were you ignored? Did they even say hi? Did they even LOOK at you? Do they uncomfortably stare? ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ‘€

You’re not buggin’, sis. They’re just racists.

*Being Treated As A Workhorse ๐Ÿ˜“๐Ÿ˜“

Is your “great work” “rewarded with more work”? Do your white colleagues do the bare minimum and remain unscathed? Get your bag money ๐Ÿ’ฐ and dip ๐Ÿ’จ ! You deserve to be your OWN boss! You are worthy of your skills and talents! ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ”ฅ

*Being Called to “Fix” White Colleagues’ Work ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™„

Twice as hard as half as much is a SCAM โ€ผ๏ธโ€ผ๏ธ. Don’t fall for it. Alecia Renece declares that the modern notion of black excellence is a myth; #blkgrlmgclwyr agrees.

You should NEVER be called to fix a white colleagues work product while they go pursue level appropriate opportunities. You deserve to be treated like the boss, not the help! America ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ can’t “help” but see you at the bottom of the totem pole. The devil is a lie.

Stifled Promotions – It Was YOUR Turn!! ๐Ÿ˜”๐Ÿ˜”

White supremacy runs on excuses. Whatever excuse serves it at the moment, is the excuse you will hear.

What excuses have you heard over the course of your career? Where do I begin…

Say, liberate yourself from all the excuses and start your own business. Black women are the fastest growing demographic in entrepreneurship. We are inherently entrepreneurial. You are worthy of your own profitability!

Disparate Compensation!! – F๐Ÿคฌ๐ŸคฌKin’ With Your ๐Ÿ’ฐ

My first law firm did not pay me my class year. When I brought this to HR’s attention, they played dumb. ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™„ Let’s make sure this DOESN’T happen to you.

Your non-black colleagues are your friends, here. Talk to your peers to see what they make. Most likely, it’s more than you. Sista, you may be owned backpay. Get your bag money ๐Ÿ’ฐ and dip ๐Ÿ’จ !
